Whereas, the labor movement faces enormous challenges in sustaining membership, in organizing, in negotiations and having a strong voice in the workplace; and
Whereas, in order to be successful as unions, we need a strong, coordinated and unified voice at the national, state and local levels; and
Whereas, state federations of labor provide the Labor Movements voice in state capitols and around the country, and central labor councils are the Labor Movements community voice; and
Whereas, state federations of labor and central labor councils have many local union affiliates and members that they fight for every day, and they speak for many with a powerful voice that carries clout in legislative and political matters; and
Whereas, state federations of labor and central labor councils can help fight with affiliated AFSA Locals when threats of reorganizing, restructuring, privatization, vouchers, and budget crisis arise, or when harmful legislation is being considered; and
Whereas, increasing AFSAs affiliation in state federations of labor and central labor councils will help build capacity and provide AFSA members a stronger voice in the Labor Movement and in labor activities
Therefore be it Resolved, that AFSA will support and encourage all of its locals to affiliate with their state federations of labor and central labor councils
