Together We Can Accomplish Great Things
The Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP) and the Montgomery County Business and Operations Administrators (MCBOA) have grown into a powerful independent union and strong voice representing its members.
However, in an increasingly complex political world, it has become apparent that MCAAP would benefit from national support. In fact, MCAAP is the only union representing workers within Montgomery County Public Schools that is not associated with a national union. MCAAP's sister organizations have national connections like the Montgomery County Education Association, which is affiliated with the National Education Association, and SEIU Local 500, which is part of the Service Employees International Union.
Joining forces with a national organization will add new resources, and provide additional research and legal counsel, as well as offer an expanded way of thinking and connecting on issues of the day. Additionally, every MCAAP member will have a wide variety of unique benefits and discounts—including $2 million in professional liability insurance. There is even a host of benefits for retirees.
A national organization will provide MCAAP members with professional learning opportunities and union leadership training programs and bring MCAAP members together with other educational professionals from around the United States to discuss hot topics, solutions and national advocacy. Plus, MCAAP can learn how other organizations representing school administrators, principals, and business and operations administrators find solutions and develop contract language to address a wide variety of topics.
In neighboring school districts such as Washington, D.C., Prince George's County, Howard County, Baltimore City, Calvert County, Kent County and Queen Anne County, school administrators, supervisors and principals are all part of the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA).
Recently, Maryland's AFSA locals formed a state organization to provide a strong lobbying voice at the statehouse on issues like the "Blueprint for Maryland's Future," and to fight for an administrator to have a seat on the state's Board of Education.
For more than six months, MCAAP leadership has been in ongoing dialogue with AFSA—the only national labor union for education administrators, professionals and supervisors, advocating for excellence and equity in all our schools.
After long discussions, in-depth vetting, attending the union's national convention and asking a slew of questions, the MCAAP Board of Directors is recommending a national affiliation with AFSA.
All MCAAP members will be presented with an affiliation resolution for a vote in March 2023.
It's vital for every member to learn more about the affiliation, and we are here to help. Please feel free to send us your questions and please watch the lateest Q&A session held with members.
